use trig to find angles

The inverse trigonometric functions allow you to find the measure of an angle in a right triangle.

the '-1' is not an exponent, it is a notation telling us that it is an inverse function. regular trig functions take angle inputs and give us side ratios. Oppositely, inverse trig ratios take side ratio inputs and give angles.
